Mangunan Fruit Garden & Pine Forests in Bantul

Dlingo in Bantul is home to a fruit garden with above-the-clouds views and a cluster of pine forests popular with nature lovers.

Before becoming a tourist destination, the hilly Dlingo area of Bantul was once barren land. It took years of reforestation to turn it into the green area now known as one of Yogyakarta’s most photographed nature spots.

Its elevation is also what makes the area special: in the morning, mist slowly rolls in and blankets the valley below, creating the “land above the clouds” illusion that’s become its main draw.

Mangunan Fruit Garden

Located in Mangunan Village, Dlingo District, about 25 km from central Yogyakarta. Alongside orchards planted with various fruit trees, the hilltop area has a photo spot overlooking the Oyo River valley, the iconic “land above the clouds” shot — most dramatic if you arrive early before the mist burns off.

Mangunan Pine Forest

A roughly 500-hectare protected forest turned ecotourism area, planted with pine, mahogany, and acacia trees. Entry is very affordable, at around IDR 5,000 per person. Photo spots vary, from wooden stages and treehouses to footpaths winding between towering pine trunks.

Pengger Pine Forest

Located in the Dlingo-Patuk area, not far from Mangunan. The vibe is similar, but it has its own iconic photo spot: a wooden platform shaped like a supporting hand, popular for golden-hour shots.

Puncak Becici

One of the highest viewpoints in this cluster, offering a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding hills and valleys — a favorite for catching sunrise without a demanding hike.

Tips for Exploring the Area

  • Arrive in the morning (before 8 AM) if mist and soft light are your main targets — the mist usually burns off by midday.
  • One day is enough for 2 to 3 stops, since they sit close together, even though the roads are steep and winding.
  • Bring a light jacket — the elevation here makes the air noticeably cooler than the city, especially in the morning.
  • Keep small cash on hand for entry at each spot, since some are managed separately by local community groups.

Given half a day or more, combining Mangunan Fruit Garden, Mangunan Pine Forest, and Puncak Becici is enough to experience a different side of Bantul, far from its beaches and temples — a cooler, greener, mountain version.
